Middle School

At Caldwell Academy, the Middle School (Dialectic School) is comprised of students in sixth through eighth grades. The focus during these years is to build on the foundation established in the Grammar School years.

A School of Discussion, Discourse, and Debate

The Dialectic School is a season of growth in which students learn to move beyond simply knowing facts to understanding, analyzing, and applying truth. As students naturally become more inquisitive and eager to engage ideas, they are taught to reason carefully, think critically, and communicate thoughtfully. Through the study of formal and informal logic, students learn the proper use of argument and develop the skills needed to pursue truth with wisdom and discernment.

Mathematics, Science, and the Tools of Learning

The tools of learning—listening, thinking, reading, writing, and speaking well—are practiced and sharpened across every subject. Rigorous study in mathematics and science challenges students to think logically and solve problems with confidence. The pre-Algebra sequence integrates Geometry and prepares students for advanced mathematical study, while science courses establish a strong foundation for future studies in physics, biology, and chemistry.

Independence Within Wise Boundaries

The Dialectic years are a time when students begin exercising greater independence while still benefiting from guidance and structure. Strong student-teacher relationships create an environment where students are known, challenged, and encouraged to ask questions, engage in meaningful discussion, and develop sound judgment. Within age-appropriate boundaries, students learn to apply discernment, navigate relationships wisely, and cultivate the habits of wisdom and virtue that are central to a classical Christian education.

Opportunities to Grow, Serve, and Lead

Student life in the Dialectic School is designed to support students as they grow academically, spiritually, and socially. Through participation in fine and performing arts, athletics, Bible studies, service projects, homeroom fellowship, competitions, and leadership opportunities, students develop meaningful relationships, discover their gifts, and cultivate an appreciation for truth, goodness, and beauty. These experiences complement the classroom and encourage students to grow in wisdom, character, and Christlike service.
